New Protection From NHS Age Discrimination Welcomed By Cambridge MP

MP Julian Huppert has welcomed new laws which will protect the elderly from age discrimination by doctors and other medical staff.

The changes mean that, from October it will be illegal for a doctor to refuse a patient treatment based on his or her age.

Hospitals and care homes will also have a duty to make sure elderly people are treated properly.

Julian said: “There is no room for age discrimination in the NHS and people should not be discriminated against for treatment just because a medical practitioner considers them too old. Our health service should be there for everyone and it is totally wrong to put elderly people in a position where they feel neglected or ignored.

“We have all heard the appalling stories of elderly people being ignored or mistreated by those who are supposed to be caring for them. These new laws will offer them protection through the courts and reinforces the duty of medical practitioners to treat them with the dignity and respect they deserve.”
