Free Nursery Education For Two-Year-Olds Welcomed By Huppert

Free nursery education is to be offered to 3,400 two-year-olds from the most hard-pressed families in Cambridgeshire over the next two years.

The news, welcomed by Cambridge MP Julian Huppert, comes after the Lib Dems pushed in government to extend free early years education which already benefits three and four-year-old children.

In September, 1,100 two-year-olds will become eligible for the scheme followed by a further 2,300 youngsters in September 2014.

Julian said: “This is great news. We know that early years education through play and stories really helps young children get ready for school.

“We also know how vital those first few years of a child’s education can be to future success and we wanted to close the attainment gap been poorer children and their more well-off classmates.

“Through this opportunity along and with the additional money available to schools through the Pupil Premium to help youngsters eligible for free school meals, we hope that we can give these children the best start.”
