Obituary - Former District Councillor Tom Flanagan - by Liz Heazell (South Cambs LD Chair)

Carol and Tom Flanagan, Chairmans Reception 10-12 Years Ago
Tom died on February 21st ten years after his wife Carol died. They had lived in
Bar Hill with their son and three daughters since the 1970s. The family played a full part in the community as was evidenced in the tributes at Tom’s Memorial service on March 1st.

Tom was a Bar Hill Parish Councillor and school governor of Bar Hill Primary School. Amongst other community activities, he with others undertook the ‘treeing’ of Bar Hill – a living testimony to his community commitment for some time to come.

Tom also had two periods of representing Bar Hill ward on the South Cambs District Council from 1978 to 1986, and again from 1996 – 2004. He is still warmly remembered in the smaller villages particularly for his interest in Housing. Tom served on the Housing and Conservation Committees, and also as one of the three members who heard Benefits Appeals where his kindly and compassionate nature was appreciated. His Liberal Democrat colleagues greatly valued his contribution to the Council.

Those present at the funeral remembered the above and his many other loves and interests outside his family including Ireland and its music, Rugby and Rock and Roll. A warm –hearted and well-rounded character who was a successful hard-working businessman  but  who had fun,as well.
