It's Electrifying - Employers Offered Free Loan Of Electric Bikes

An Electric Bike free loan scheme for employers is being launched in June to help encourage staff to travel by bicycle for commuting and business trips.

Two hybrid Bosch pedal assist bicycles are being provided by Cambridgeshire Travel for Work (TfW) Partnership in collaboration with The Electric Transport Shop to employers in the Huntingdon – Cambridge and Ely – Cambridge corridors.  The project is supported and funded by Cambridgeshire County Council from the Government’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

The electric bicycle loan scheme aims to help staff plan alternative journeys and routes that they may not have considered or thought possible. In places with busy transport routes, like Huntingdon Ely and Cambridge this can help relieve traffic congestion which has a positive impact on businesses in the area.

The project follows on the success of the electric pool bikes made available to employees on Cambridge Science Park by Travel Plan Plus, a sister organisation of TfW.  TP+ electric bikes have been popular with employees who make short business trips and find it more convenient to park.  Also employees may try-out the bikes on their commute and buy an ordinary bike or electric bike as a result.

Bess Sayers, Project Manager at TfW said “TfW is pleased to be working with The Electric Transport Shop in providing electric bikes as an attractive and fun alternative means of transport for commuting and business trips.  The loan scheme will hopefully encourage employers to purchase their own electric pool bikes with the help of TfW grant funding available.”

Jamie McAlley, Director of The Electric Transport Shop, who will be managing the contracted service said “Electric bike technology has improved dramatically in our 8 years of business. Effortless, hassle free journeys to work are now within easy, affordable reach. Enjoyable, leisurely commutes where the rider chooses how much they put in are a reality. These Bosch powered ebikes are certain to be a revelation to all those who try them. We very much look forward to contributing our services and supporting the Travel for Work initiative."

TfW assists employers to promote and deliver sustainable and healthy employee travel to and for work. This helps reduce congestion, boost the local economy and improve health.  If you are interested in finding out more please contact TfW 01223 715550.

Employers will need to register their interest early as there is limited availability and bookings will be made on a first come first served basis. If you are interested in finding out more, please contact TfW 01223 715550.

The electric bike loan project is being financed through the Department for Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund. The award is being used for a programme of measures aimed at ‘Getting Cambridgeshire to work’ and should improve the County’s potential for growing and attracting business, ensuring that Cambridgeshire leads the way back to economic growth. Better transport links can also help people to access important services or leisure facilities.
