Superfast Broadband On Its Way To South Cambridgeshire

Businesses and households in South Cambridgeshire are being reassured they won’t have to wait too much longer for superfast broadband.

Elsworth, Graveley, Papworth and Willingham are among the first of the district’s 100 plus villages being considered for inclusion in the first tranche of broadband roll-out across Cambridgeshire.

Business and residents are being reassured that many other South Cambridgeshire areas will be reached by subsequent phases of the roll-out in 2014, with every community being reached by the end of 2015.

Over 9,000 people in the district registered their demand for superfast broadband – a significant proportion of those signing up across Cambridgeshire – supported by local volunteer Broadband Champions, businesses and district and parish councillors.

Cllr Nick Wright, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s lead member for economic development, said: “We understand that people may be disappointed that only a few of our villages are being considered for the first phase. However, we have been reassured by the Connecting Cambridgeshire team that planning and design work for the later phases is already underway, with a significant number of our villages included in the next two phases of the multiple phase rollout programme during 2014.

“We’re one of the fastest growing areas in the country, and our businesses are crying out for up to date technology infrastructure, which is why we’re working with the Connecting Cambridgeshire programme to bid for extra Government funding to get the best possible outcome for our district.”

Cambridgeshire County Councillor Cllr Ian Bates, Cabinet Member for Growth and Planning, said: “We recognise the importance of a better broadband infrastructure for South Cambridgeshire businesses and we are awaiting the outcome of our bid for Super Connected Cities funding which will support this.

“The important thing is we are getting on with this now so everyone will benefit from better broadband. Without this intervention programme, around a third of premises across the county would not be able to receive superfast broadband.”

Further details of the roll-out phases and a parish checker will be available later this year on the Connecting Cambridgeshire website atwww.connectingcambridgeshire.co.uk
