A petition by the organisers of the campaign to open the March to Wisbech railway line has been welcomed by Cambridgeshire Liberal Democrats.

Members of the Wisbech Rail Reopening Campaign will present the petition to Cambridgeshire County Council tomorrow (Tuesday, July 16).

Susan van de Ven, Lib Dem Spokesperson for Transport and a member of the campaign group Railfuture, said: “This petition reflects the overwhelming support for reinstating this vital transport link, and the social and economic benefits it would bring to the wider area.

“The Lib Dem Group has over the years actively supported work to reopen the March-Wisbech Line. We recognise that regeneration of rail as a key component of the county’s local and regional transport network has had a huge boost through the cross-party work of the region’s MPs and it vital that this broad support continues.

“Without the reopening of rail, Wisbech is cut out of quality public transport links, at a time when bus services are on the decline and gaps in access to employment and training opportunities are growing.

“We are encouraged by early signs of support from the county council and hope that the voice of the people of Wisbech will indeed add momentum toward reopening this vital rail link.”
