Andrew Duff Backs Tough Tobacco Legislation

Commenting on todays vote in the European Parliament on the Tobacco Products Directive.

Andrew Duff commented

'I was happy to support the Parliament's position on tobacco today. Greater restrictions have been put on the marketing of cigarettes, especially to young people. And e-cigarettes, which are clearly popular with many people as a way to stop smoking, will be treated as an ordinary product and not as a medicine.

Now the draft law goes into a negotiation between the Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of Ministers. Despite differences of culture across Europe with respect to tobacco use, after today it now looks possible to get a cross-party consensus on the matter, leading to another good piece of EU law before the elections next year.'
