Liberal Democrats on a Royal Charter For The Press

It is essential that a new press watchdog is independent of both Government and the newspaper industry. The Privy Council Committee has taken a hard look at the proposals from the press, following the normal and proper processes, and has found them wanting.

We now have to get on with sealing the historic agreement reached by the three major parties earlier this year.

A final draft of the Royal Charter will be published and has been placed on the agenda of a special meeting of the Privy Council on 30th October. This will finally secure the independent, robust and fair system that the public want to see.
