Change.Org: Bereavement Leave

I just signed this petition and I'd urge you to do the same - three days leave for the death of a loved one is in absolutely no way enough to deal with the loss. Most companies I'm sure would be understanding, but making the leave a legal requirement would make it one less thing to worry about during a very distressing time.

Please share this as widely as possible.

No one can prepare you for the devastation of losing a child. When our 23-month-old son Jack died in a drowning accident, we were devastated. At a time when we needed time and support from people around us, I discovered that you were only allowed three days off work, including the funeral.

I was shocked to find out that there is no legal requirement to offer bereavement leave following the death of a child. In the immediate aftermath there is so much to deal with that three days is not enough. That’s why I started a petition calling for statutory bereavement leave for all parents. Please join me.

It’s a no-brainer -- even the Prime Minister has acknowledged this is an important issue. Earlier this month during Prime Minister’s Questions David Cameron said he would look into the issue. Having lost his child in 2009 he knows how important it is to be given time to grieve.

Some employers will give staff two weeks leave but not everyone is fortunate enough to have a good employer who is understanding and allows compassionate leave. Some people need the protection of statutory leave.

At the moment Parliament is reviewing a bill that includes introducing parental bereavement leave. If enough of us sign this petition it will send a message to Cameron, and the rest of Parliament, that we need to fix this and help any parents who go through what we went through.

Please sign my petition calling for statutory bereavement leave for all parents.

Thank you
