Local LibDem City Councillor Calls For Urgent Safety Measures At Junction

Liberal Democrat Councillor Rod Cantrill has called for urgent safety improvements to a major Cambridge road junction before someone is seriously injured or killed.

Cllr Cantrill, who represents Newnham on Cambridge City Council is worried about the junction of Barton Road, Newnham Road and Grantchester Street.

The busy junction is used by parents taking their children to Newnham Croft School and forms part of the major Blue Cycle Route from west Cambridge to Trumpington.

Cllr Cantrill and his ward colleague, Lib Dem County Councillor Lucy Nethsingha collected 260 signatures on a petition calling on the county council to make improvements to the junction.

The petition was presented to the county council Cabinet yesterday (Tuesday, December 17) by Cllr Cantrill and Newnham ward councillors have asked that the improvements be funded through the council’s highway improvement scheme or the developer contribution highways funds

Cllr Cantrill said: “This is an extremely busy junction used by drivers, cyclists and pedestrians including parents walking young children to school. Clearly this is a dangerous mix and I am worried that unless improvements are made, someone could be seriously injured or even killed.

“It is crucial that county council highways officers look into this issue urgently so that we can get the funding we need to make this junction safer for everyone.

“It is clear from the number of people that have signed this petition that there are real concerns.”
