People In Need Of Housing Unlock Early Christmas Gift

Four people in need of housing received an early Christmas present today (Friday 13 December) when they were given the keys to their newly built council homes in Linton.

The completion of the four new council homes was marked by a celebration event attended by tenants, councillors, builders and architects.

The one-bedroom semi-detached homes in Chalklands, Linton are the first to be completed as part of South Cambridgeshire District Council’s biggest programme of new council houses since the 1950s, and replace a block of ten under-utilised garages.

Over the next 30 years the Council will be investing millions of pounds to build up to 1,000 new council-owned and affordable properties. The building programme has been made possible by the Council’s innovative thinking following changes in Government policy that mean all rent collected from Council tenants will remain in the district.

The new homes have all been built to meet the Lifetime Homes standards to make them accessible and adaptable for residents. They also comply with Home and Communities Agency standards and have been designed to be energy efficient with air source heat pumps and solar panels.

Councillor Mark Howell, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for housing, said: “We know how much demand there is for new council housing in South Cambridgeshire and to have these fantastic new homes ready for residents to celebrate Christmas in is a real bonus.

"The completion of this first phase of our build programme marks a new era for council houses and these four new quality homes are just the start of more to come.
“Technology has come a long way since the early days of council houses and today's new homes are finished to a high specification with energy saving equipment to make them desirable and affordable."

New tenant Katy Lester, 25, said: "I'm over the moon. After 5 years in temporary accommodation it's great to have a place to call home. Everything in the house is brand new and finished to a high standard, and there is ample space for me to live in and enjoy. I feel very lucky and look forward to building a new life for myself here.”
