Woodland Trust: Enough Is Enough - Ancient Woodland Needs Full Protection Now

In November we asked our supporters to help ensure the future of woodland creation grants. We had 30,000 responses to our petition and today we have seen a huge win in this campaign as the Secretaryof State for the Environment, Owen Paterson MP, stated Defra's future commitments to woodland creation post 2015. Government has listened to you!

However, Government's aspirations are still a long way off

The 2014 commitment to plant 2,000 hectares of woodland falls far short of the 5,000 hectares per year needed to reach the 12% aspiration mentioned today. It also means planting rates will fall to a ten year low.

To add to this, Mr Paterson's latest comments around biodiversity offsetting also demonstrate, once again, that England's precious ancient woodland is being forsaken, sold out and betrayed. Biodiversity offsetting doesn't work for ancient woods, the planning system doesn't work for ancient woods and this government doesn't work for ancient woods.

Enough is enough – ancient woodland needs full protection – from development, from 'offsetting' and from misinterpretation. What remains of our ancient woodland can be saved.
