Lib Dems Win Concessions On Cuts To Children's Centres And Winter Gritting From Tories

The Conservative run County Council have approved a budget based on a 1.99% council tax increase and severe cuts to services.

The Liberal Democrat group opposed the Tory budget, saying the proposals made unacceptable cuts to services for the most vulnerable.  Some Lib Dem proposals, such as reduced cuts to children's centres and winter gritting were accepted, but the over-all picture remains very bleak.

"This Conservative budget, supported by local Conservative Councillors, remains a shocking reflection of the way the Tories have run the council for the past 20 years. We are pleased they have listened a little and found the money to retain some of the most crucial services." said Local Councillor Andy Pellew

"The Tories' failure to manage the council's finances in a prudent way in the past has left the council's finances in an appalling situation.  They should be ashamed of the level of cuts in this budget." said Lucy Nethsingha deputy Leader of the Lib Dem Group on theCounty Council
