Cambridge MP Newsletter: Clegg Visits Cambridge, Celebrating Apprenticeships And Talking Crime And Policing

Nick Clegg Celebrates City Deal in Cambridge

It was great to welcome Nick Clegg back to Cambridge yesterday to celebrate the signing of the Greater Cambridge City Deal. This deal, which Tim Bick, Leader of the City Council, worked so hard on, will bring a £1 billion investment in transport and housing to boost growth in and around Cambridge. As Nick put it, the deal “builds the foundations for long term growth in Cambridge for this generation and the next, building a stronger economy and doing it fairly.”

Nick and I also visited the Science Park to look at NAPP, where Nick held a Q&A session with people working on the Park. It was good to hear more from him about the City Deal, the extra £800 people are getting from the change in the income tax threshold and apprenticeships among other things.

A Cut Above the Rest – Supporting Apprenticeships in Cambridge

Talking of apprentices, I started off the week with a trip to Dann Richards Hair and Beauty as part of my Celebrating Apprenticeships campaign. I met apprentice Ellena who treated me to a quick trim. Ellena is just one of hundreds of apprentices being supported by Liberal Democrat policy in Cambridge. And meeting her boss, Dann - who also trained through an apprenticeship at CRC and went on to buy the hairdressers Ellena now trains in - just goes to show what apprenticeships can do for young people.

Talking Crime and Policing with PCC Graham Bright

This morning I met with Police and Crime Commissioner Graham Bright, to try to push him and the police to take action on many issues that affect us. I want to see the police being much more active in tackling domestic violence, and to be much more supportive of people with mental health problems – these people should not be in police cells if at all possible. I also want to make sure the police enforce traffic rules, such as the 20mph zones coming into effect in Cambridge after a great deal of campaigning.
