Where's the Leader?

Liberal Democrat Councillors on South Cambridgeshire District Council have been asking where the Conservative Leader of the Council is as South Cambridgeshire faces one of the biggest threats to date to the character and distinctiveness of our villages following the Planning Inspector's recent decisions regarding Waterbeach.

Sebastian Kindersley, PPC for South Cambridgeshire said:  "At a time when 105 South Cambs parishes face speculative unplanned development as a result of the Council's failure to demonstrate a five year land supply they are entitled to expect strong, visible and effective leadership. Instead Cllr Manning has sacked his Portfolio-holder and disappeared without trace - a crisis meeting held Thursday of Group Leaders and key Council officers had to be held in his absence. In his position I would be attending Parish Councils, meeting with key partners and lobbying the Government for immediate change in the way this land supply is calculated."

Cllr Bridget Smith Leader of the LD Group commented "We warned the Tories that this Local Plan was a disaster waiting to happen and so it has proved. We were not alone either - thousands of South Cambridgeshire residents objected to what the Conservatives led by Cllr Manning proposed.  The time for examining the series of failures that led us to this point is in the future - and rest assured that we will make sure this Council learns from its mistake - the immediate issue is to resolve the planning threat and ensure the character of our District is preserved and enhanced".

She continued "If anyone sees Cllr Manning could they let him know South Cambridgeshire is in trouble and needs some effective and immediate leadership. If he's not available perhaps he could step aside for someone prepared to step up to the job."
